How Is Dance Like Cranial Therapy?
How Is Dance Like Cranial Therapy?
The Earth is your dance partner
How is dance like cranial therapy? A story to illustrate.
Yesterday I treated a patient I haven’t seen in 22 years. In this case, by treated, I mean hands-on, in-person, though the experience is not so different than remotes sensing. What I mean by this is that by following his healing forces with my attention, his body revealed that although his main complaint was a headache, we needed to start with his ankles and calves. Curious? For sure.
Having been served well by following the body’s lead, I did as I was told. I allowed my attention to drift down (my hands were actually on his tailbone). It felt like less work, more in flow, to soften and expand my attention to the edges of the room, so I did that too.
I was not looking at anything. Kind of like you might not look, might go wide and soft with your gaze the way you might enter a field filled with wild animals you don’t want to scare away.
Then I saw it. At the edge of my field of subtle sensing, a rally of current going back and forth between his lower legs and head. Eureka!
After eavesdropping on this conversation for a while, I had a strong sense that one piece of this fellow’s freedom would be found in his gait. It seemed plain as day. This was synchronistic, as last week’s News Drop opened the conversation on the way patterns in the lower body affect the head.
Another Synchronicity: Just now I’m recalling he is — or was — a ballroom dancer. I’ll revisit this with him when we check in tomorrow.
Walking, dancing, craniums and sacrums. Oh my!
A little review from last week . . .
🌀 In cranial treatment we teach parents to dance (with their hands to the baby’s feet) to free up their skull bones. Osteopaths know about this, it’s a thing.
🌀 To free up tensions in your head, when you walk or dance feel yourself connect with the Earth as if she were your dance partner. Dancers know about this, it’s a thing.
Earth as hands. Earth as cranial osteopath.
There are many lovely ways to engage the sense of restore your gait’s natural osteopathic qualities- let’s add another drop!

“You have all given me insights that have allowed me to feel much more comfortable back in my own shoes and who I am — but also to breathe easier in this world.”
